Darren Jacklin

Now I normally don’t write long entries about the people I photograph, but how can I not for someone who has made such an enormous impact on my life in such a short period of time. I met Darren Jacklin 3 weeks ago at a conference and since then I’ve gone through changes that almost scare me! A man who was able to make me pursue my passion for photography full-time without any regrets, Darren Jacklin is a world-class professional speaker and MEGA MANIFESTOR. If any of you are familiar with Tony Robbins and what he does, Darren carries with him the same passion to bring the best out of people. But instead of listening to me, you should have a look at a couple of his sites: http://www.darrenjacklin.com/ & http://www.ideapartyevent.com/

Composition Tips | Rule of Thirds (gota know this one!)

If you’ve started out as I did in photography, you probably began by placing all your subjects in the center of the frame. Although this is a natural inclination when starting out in photography, it results in most of your pictures, especially when photographing people, being uninteresting and looking like everyone else’s. As a photographer you want your pictures to be both unique and dynamic, and one of the first steps towards that is to incorporate simple but effective composition techniques into your images.

The rule of thirds is one such rule, and the principle is illustrated in the image below. By cutting your image frame into 9 separate rectangles by four lines, you end up with 4 intersecting points, illustrated by the circles below, from which you generally want your subject to be. In the image below, the slide falls upon the intersecting point symbolized by the blue circle.

Rule of Thirds

Essentially what the rule of thirds introduces into your image is asymmetry. When shooting people in landscape orientation as opposed to portrait, this technique works very well. However, just because it’s called the rule of thirds, doesn’t mean you should treat it like, well, a rule. As one of my photography mentor’s has taught me, “master the rules, and break’em”. So if you’re only just starting out, apply the rule of thirds as often as you can and see what it can do for your images.
